Cardinal opens complex to boost Catholic identity, bridge cultures

Published: 2004-04-26

VENICE, Italy (CNS) -- In a move aimed at strengthening the identity of Catholic education and restoring Venice's role as a cultural bridge to the East, Cardinal Angelo Scola inaugurated a unique educational complex that runs from nursery school through post-graduate programs. The unified approach of the complex, called the "Studium Generale Marcianum," is designed to avoid a sense of educational fragmentation and to produce students better able to explain the "why" of their faith, Cardinal Scola said. Cardinal Scola was joined by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican secretary of state, at inauguration ceremonies April 24 at the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, the Venetian headquarters of the new institution, across the Grand Canal from St. Mark's Square.
