U.S. bishops' head welcomes liturgy instruction; few changes seen

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The head of the U.S. bishops welcomed a new Vatican instruction aimed at curbing liturgical abuses. The instruction, "Redemptionis Sacramentum" ("The Sacrament of Redemption") was issued April 23 by the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments. In a brief statement released in Washington Bishop Wilton D. Gregory of Belleville, Ill., president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said, "The congregation has provided us with a carefully developed tool to foster the authentic celebration of the Mass." He noted that the Second Vatican Council 40 years ago called the celebration of the Eucharist "the source and summit" of the entire Christian life.
