At Rome seminar, security experts offer tips on defeating terrorism
Published: 2004-04-23
ROME (CNS) -- Security experts at a Rome conference offered mixed opinions on how best to defeat terrorist networks. U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican Jim Nicholson, whose embassy organized the event, said the April 22 conference was in response to Pope John Paul II's challenge to nations and international institutions to work toward a more effective and peaceful world order. Earlier this year, in his World Day of Peace message, the pope said international law and institutions needed to adapt to the worldwide threat of terrorism. In his opening remarks, Nicholson said the United States recognizes terrorism will not be defeated "by relying on military might alone." Terrorist networks must be fought "using every means at our disposal -- diplomatic, economic, law enforcement, information-sharing, intelligence and military," he said. He said the United States must work with the international community if it is "to defeat this threat to our way of life."
