
Editor of papal encyclical guides, encyclopedia index dies at 97

MONROE, Mich. (CNS) -- Sister Claudia Carlen, who edited five volumes of papal encyclicals and other major Catholic resources, died April 19 at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe. Sister Carlen, 97, was a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. A funeral Mass was to be celebrated April 26 in the chapel at her congregation's motherhouse in Monroe, followed by burial in St. Mary Cemetery on the grounds of the motherhouse. Sister Carlen edited the five volumes of "The Papal Encyclicals, 1740-1981" as well as the "Guide to the Encyclicals," the "Guide to the Documents of Pius XII" and the Dictionary of Papal Pronouncements. A native of Detroit, she was born on July 24, 1906, and baptized Dorothy Margaret Carlen. She entered religious life in 1926 and took the name Claudia.
