Published: 2004-04-21
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CNS) -- A young Mexican woman whose Hodgkin's disease is in remission following treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis is the first recipient of the St. Jude Scholarship at Christian Brothers University, also in Memphis. Belen Lopez, from a small town near Guadalajara, is a freshman who is studying business at Christian Brothers University. She hopes eventually to earn a graduate degree in international business. She underwent a bone marrow transplant at St. Jude for Hodgkin's disease, a cancerous growth of cells in the lymphatic system. The St. Jude Scholarship was established recently to provide financial support for students who face the dual challenge of working on their college degree and needing treatment at St. Jude.
