New bishops' president calls on Poles to emphasize Gospel values
Published: 2004-04-20
WARSAW, Poland (CNS) -- The new president of the Polish bishops' conference called on Poles to emphasize Gospel values in their daily lives. "Like all Europeans, Poles often are unable to translate their faith into everyday life; they're Christians at home and church, but aren't guided by Gospel values at work," said Archbishop Jozef Michalik of Przemysl, conference president. "We've succumbed to a world of relative behavior, and the faith of some Poles isn't deep enough. There are certainly too many empty words, too much throwing of slogans without substance," he said. Archbishop Michalik was elected president of the bishops' conference in mid-March, succeeding Cardinal Jozef Glemp of Warsaw, who held the post for 23 years.
