ARLINGTON, Va. (CNS) -- Members of the National Council of Catholic Women raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars in 2003 for its partnership program with Catholic Relief Services called Works of Peace and Works of Reconciliation. "Compassion for women around the world -- a hallmark of our activities since we were founded in 1920 -- may be the outreach dearest to our members' hearts," said Margaret "Maggie" Gray of Williamsburg, Va., NCCW president. "Women are particularly vulnerable to the tragic consequences of world health epidemics such as HIV/AIDS; war and dislocation; lack of basic resources such as clean water; and the absence of basic services such as education, sanitation, or maternal and child health care because women shoulder so much of the responsibility of caring for the young, the infirm, and others who cannot care for themselves," she added. She made the comments in a statement released by the council's headquarters in Arlington.
