
Pope nominates female Australian researcher to sciences academy

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II nominated Australian Suzanne Cory, an internationally recognized pioneer in medical research and molecular biology, as a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. The Vatican made the announcement April 17. Cory is a professor of medical biology at the University of Melbourne and director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Parkville, Australia. Her current research focuses on cancer and the study of how the death of cells is regulated. Cory joins four other female scientists in the academy; they include Rita Levi-Montalcini, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in medicine.
