
New president/rector named for Cincinnati seminary, theology school

CINCINNATI (CNS) -- Father Edward P. Smith, director of formation at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Cincinnati and former vice rector and director of liturgy at the North American College in Rome, has been appointed the 32nd president/rector of The Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary's Seminary, effective July 1. Father Smith, 48, succeeds Father Gerald R. Haemmerle, who held the position for more than seven years and stepped down to return to parish work. He will become pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Kettering July 1. The appointment was announced March 26 by Cincinnati Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk. Ordained in 1982, Father Smith has served as a teacher and campus minister at two Catholic high schools in the Cincinnati Archdiocese and held a number of parish posts. He was director of liturgy at the North American College from 1995 to 2000 and vice rector there from 1999 to 2000. He was named director of formation at the Cincinnati seminary in 2000.
