U.S. Archbishop Foley reappointed head of Vatican communications post
Published: 2004-04-16
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has appointed U.S. Archbishop John P. Foley to a fifth five-year term as president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. "It's a very nice indication of confidence on the part of the Holy Father," Archbishop Foley told Catholic News Service April 16. Archbishop Foley, 68, came to the communications council in 1984. Since then, the council has published important documents on several media-related issues, including ethics in advertising, pornography, the Internet, and ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. The archbishop helped pioneer the Vatican's own entry onto the Internet, and increasingly his council has examined the pastoral and ethical dimensions opened by new communications technology.
