Catholic-Anglican consultation meets
Published: 2004-04-15
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- U.S. Catholic and Anglican scholars discussed two major ongoing projects, on authority in the church and on Eucharist and ministry, at their semiannual meeting March 25-28 in Washington. They also discussed current issues in their respective churches -- notably the clergy sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church and the tensions in the Anglican Communion over the recent ordination of an openly gay bishop in the U.S. Episcopal Church -- as part of the context for their dialogue in its current stage. The meeting was the 56th session of the Anglican-Roman Catholic Consultation in the United States, ARC-USA, which began in 1965. In the area of Eucharist and ministry, participants discussed a draft of "God's Gift of Unity: A Study Guide for Episcopalians and Roman Catholics." Designed to help Catholics and Episcopalians in the pews deepen their understanding of their shared faith traditions as well as their differences, the guide is intended as a basis for parish-level discussion groups and dialogues.
