MARYKNOLL, N.Y. (CNS) -- Father Peter LeJacq of Manhasset, N.Y., a Maryknoll missionary priest and physician, received the first Healer's Award from the Celtic Medical Society in a New York City ceremony. Begun in 1891, the society is the oldest medical society in New York City, with nearly 80 members of Celtic descent, representing all medical specialties. Currently on special assignment at Maryknoll headquarters, Father LeJacq is coordinating efforts in the United States to raise $21 million for Bugando University College of Health Sciences, a medical, nursing, dental and pharmacy school that opened in September in Mwanza, Tanzania. The priest has been the official U.S. liaison for Bugando Medical Center in Mwanza since 1987. He was assistant head of the hospital's department of internal medicine, 1987-90; assistant head of the department of community medicine, 1990-96; and assistant chaplain, 1987-96.
