Christian, Jewish, Muslim leaders in Minnesota unite on issue of poor
Published: 2004-04-08
ST. PAUL, Minn. (CNS) -- A group of Minnesota religious leaders -- including the state's Catholic bishops -- have issued a joint document calling people of faith to work together around a common set of principles to care for the poor. The statement is titled "A Common Foundation: Shared Principles for Work on Overcoming Poverty." The leaders who signed it hope it will help shape communities and become the basis for the judgments people of faith make about public issues and policies, said Bishop Peter Rogness of the St. Paul area synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, who drafted the statement. Signers included Jewish, Muslim, Catholic and Protestant leaders. "It certainly is not news that religious folks are inclined to work on behalf of the poor," Bishop Rogness said at a press conference in St. Paul at the chancery building of the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis.
