ARLINGTON, Va. (CNS) -- Sister M. Majella Berg, whose 33-year tenure as president of Marymount University in Arlington made her the longest-serving female college president in the United States, died April 5 at the Marymount Convent in Tarrytown, N.Y. She was 87. A member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 68 years, she was born Mae Katherine Berg in Brooklyn, N.Y. Under her leadership during 1960-93, Marymount grew from a two-year college serving 240 women to a four-year school offering bachelor's degrees in 1973 and to a coeducational university in 1986. Currently, the university has nearly 4,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.
