
Eucharistic congress set for Sept. 24-25 at basilica in Washington

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious will sponsor a eucharistic congress Sept. 24-25 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. The theme of the free event is "Heaven Unites With Earth," taken from Pope John Paul II's April 2003 encyclical, "Ecclesia de Eucharistia." Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia, episcopal liaison to the CMSWR, is scheduled to convene the congress, which will include Masses, catechesis, prayer, eucharistic procession and adoration, and special activities designed for youths. Speakers are to include Cardinal Francis Arinze, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments; Cardinal J. Francis Stafford, the former archbishop of Denver who heads the Apostolic Penitentiary at the Vatican; Coadjutor Bishop Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston; Sister Nirmala Joshi, superior general of the Missionaries of Charity; and Anne Thuan, the sister of the late Vietnamese Cardinal Francois Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan, who was president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.
