Egyptian Catholic says U.S. role in Middle East shows double standard
Published: 2004-02-24
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- U.S. policy in the Middle East reflects a double standard, and the injustices it breeds will fuel terrorism, said the general secretary of the Egyptian Catholic dioceses' justice and peace committee. "I'm coming from an area where almost every country and everyone is greatly affected by any American political or economic decisions, to the extent of affecting our daily activities," said Dr. Maged Moussa, who also serves as a consultant to the Middle East Council of Churches' justice, peace and human rights program. Moussa, an orthopedic surgeon, spoke at a Feb. 22 symposium sponsored by the Roundtable, a U.S. association of diocesan social action directors. The symposium was held in conjunction with the Feb. 22-25 Catholic Social Ministry Gathering in Washington. He told the audience it was important for Americans to hear how U.S. government policy is perceived in the Mideast.
