Published: 2004-02-24
NEW DELHI, India (CNS) -- Sister Nirmala Joshi, superior general of the Missionaries of Charity, said she was not robbed after her vehicle was among dozens detained by gunmen in eastern India. Sister Nirmala told Catholic News Service that the robbers "did no harm to us" and "took nothing away from us" during the Feb. 21 incident, although the priest who was driving the nuns was robbed of about $22. Sister Nirmala was traveling with four Missionaries of Charity nuns when their vehicle was stopped by gun-wielding robbers in eastern Jharkhand state. She said one of the bandits approached her vehicle, banged on the door and opened it. "Seeing us, he said, 'These are missionaries, leave them,'" Sister Nirmala said.
