Twin Cities to get third Catholic radio station
Published: 2004-02-16
MINNEAPOLIS (CNS) -- With the purchase of its third radio station to serve St. Paul-Minneapolis, a Wisconsin-based national network of Catholic radio stations will be able to double its signal strength and broadcast to the entire 10-county Twin Cities metro area day and night, seven days a week. Starboard Media Foundation Inc. of Green Bay, which broadcasts in the Twin Cities under the brand name Relevant Radio, bought Minneapolis-based WMNN, 1330 AM, from Minnesota Public Radio, for $6.75 million Jan. 23. Sherry Brownrigg, western region president for Relevant Radio, said Starboard, which is fully listener-supported, received a donation to purchase the station. She did not disclose the donor's name. Currently, Relevant Radio programming has been broadcast on two lower-power, daytime-only stations at 1530 AM and 740 AM. The sale of WMNN must be approved by the Federal Communications Commission, a process expected to take about 100 days before it is finalized. Minnesota Public Radio has leased WMNN to the MNN Radio Networks since 1995, officials said.
