Spanish bishops criticize rise in violence, family breakdown

Published: 2004-02-06

MADRID, Spain (CNS) -- Spanish bishops have criticized the growing rate of domestic violence and breakdown in families in their country. In a 250-page report released in Madrid Feb. 3, the bishops said that "the church considers service to the family as one of its essential tasks." The statement said, "Yet some are attempting to impose false concepts of marriage and family life based on a notion of freedom that ignores the truth about the human person's nature and dignity. In this way, the family's very identity is being questioned." The bishops said "grave dangers to the family are being posed in philosophy, morality and civil legislation," with society facing an alarming increase in domestic violence, sexual abuse and "underprivileged, unloved children." They said the government has failed in its responsibilities to families by enacting "only partial measures" to address problems.
