Woman leaves behind love of training horses for call to vocation
Published: 2004-02-05
ERIE, Pa. (CNS) -- An ancient Arabian proverb proclaims, "The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears." Trish Tyler felt that wind many times until she received the call to hang up the reins and hop on a different saddle -- one of service in the Sisters of Mercy. Sister Trish certainly had no plans to join a religious community when she first felt a call in her 20s to do "something different" and joined Mercy Corps. "I did not want to hear about it," she told the Lake Shore Visitor, newspaper of the Diocese of Erie. "I was very adamant when one of the sisters asked me about joining. I said 'NO. And don't ever ask me again!'" Her love of horses began when she was a little girl and her family moved "out to the country" in west Erie County. "My father put me up on a young colt -- I was about 3 -- and I just loved it," she said.
