FAIRFIELD, Conn. (CNS) -- Jesuit Father Jeffrey von Arx, dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill of Fordham University, has been selected as the eighth president of Jesuit-run Fairfield University. Father von Arx, 56, will succeed Jesuit Father Aloysius P. Kelley, who announced last October that he would retire at the end of the 2003-04 academic year after 25 years of service. "His are big shoes to fill, and I will do my best to honor his example," said Father von Arx of Father Kelley. Prior to going to Fordham as dean in 1998, Father von Arx began his academic career in 1982 at Georgetown University as a faculty member in the history department, which he chaired from 1991 to 1997. He was a founding director of the Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies in Georgetown's School of Foreign Service. A member of the Society of Jesus since 1969 and a priest since 1981, he holds a bachelor's degree in history from Princeton University, and master's degrees in history and philosophy and a doctorate in history from Yale University.
