Collins retires after 42 years at Columbus Catholic newspaper
Published: 2004-02-02
COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNS) -- Ask him how to spell a word, any word. He knows. Ask him who was the mayor of Jerusalem in 1977. He knows. Ask him about the functions of a Linotype machine. He knows. But Michael E. Collins, 65, is more than just a living dictionary, almanac and encyclopedia stationed in the office of The Catholic Times, newspaper of the Columbus Diocese, for four decades; he is a valuable diocesan treasure. And, after 42 years of service, he retired Jan. 30. "I probably know as much about the Catholic Church in this diocese in the last 40 years as anybody," he said. Of all his accomplishments as a newspaperman, Collins is most proud of the 1968 edition of The Catholic Times commemorating the 100th anniversary of the diocese. The centennial anniversary edition took about five months to compile.
