PLANO, Texas (CNS) -- The first new Catholic high school in the Diocese of Dallas in 40 years will open in the fall of 2005, the diocese announced Jan. 20. After years of anticipation and planning, officials signed legal documents to establish John Paul II High School in Plano, a suburb north of Dallas. The diocese has grown rapidly in recent years and now includes nearly 1 million Catholics, a majority of whom are Hispanic immigrants. Dallas Bishop Charles V. Grahmann said the announcement achieves one of his major goals since becoming bishop in 1990. The new school will be the fourth diocesan-run high school. There are also four privately operated Catholic high schools in the diocese. The property for the new high school includes 47 acres and an existing vacant office building that will be remodeled for the school.
