Archbishop Burke squeezes in extra event on busy installation day

ST. LOUIS (CNS) -- More than 800 people turned out at the Savvis Center in St. Louis Jan. 26 for the Sports Trivia Championship to benefit St. Patrick Center and its work to fight homelessness. Amid all the sports greats in attendance at the arena, home of the St. Louis Blues hockey team, was a leader in another field: Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, the newly installed head of the St. Louis Archdiocese. The trivia night competition began at 7 p.m. Archbishop Burke's installation Mass had ended at about 4:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. He then attended a reception at nearby Rosati-Kain Catholic High School, in the city's central west end, greeting well-wishers. He was scheduled to attend the final event of a long and busy day, the installation dinner at a downtown St. Louis hotel. But the archbishop chose to squeeze in a few minutes before the dinner to give the invocation at the trivia night across town because of his concern for homeless people. Proceeds from the Sports Trivia Championship, which was presented by Budweiser, went to St. Patrick Center, the Catholic Charities agency that is the largest provider of homeless services in Missouri.
