Sisters from Midwest mark 10 years of joint communications effort
Published: 2004-01-28
DUBUQUE, Iowa (CNS) -- Ten years ago, sisters from nine religious communities in the Midwest took their cue from the admonition in chapter 5 of Mark to let their "light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." Their joint effort gave birth to a communications group called Sisters United News of the Upper Mississippi Valley, also known as SUN. Today, the group consists of 13 congregations of women religious representing sisters who are based in Iowa, western Illinois and southwestern Wisconsin. In Dubuque, 26 women gathered recently at the Mount Carmel motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Sisters United News. It was overcast outside, but inside the motherhouse in the Dubuque Archdiocese the room radiated with the energy and vision of women who have become more visible in expressing their priorities: welcoming immigrants; nurturing the environment; advocating peace; opposing war with Iraq; opposing the death penalty; affirming the dignity of every person; enhancing spirituality; and promoting vocations to religious life.
