VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II thanked the Italian police corps that patrols St. Peter's Square and the perimeter of the Vatican, saying he appreciates the protection they offer at a time of heightened terrorism alert. Italy has tightened security in the area around Vatican City in recent months after reports of an unspecified terrorism threat. The pope spoke to the Italian police officers Jan. 20 at an annual encounter at the Vatican. He expressed his appreciation of the service they have provided throughout his 25-year pontificate. "Your task has become more complex in recent years, because episodes of cruel terrorist violence have strongly shaken the security of our cities," he said. "While vigilance is intensified with every possible means, every day the need to educate toward peace becomes more urgent," he said. He added that in the face of violent situations around the world it was important not to give up on peace. The pope assured the officers that he shared their worries and supported them with prayers.
