OTTAWA (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has named Bishop Raymond Roussin of Victoria, British Columbia, to head the Vancouver Archdiocese, the Canadian bishops announced. At the same time, the pope accepted the resignation of Vancouver Archbishop Adam Exner, 75. Archbishop Roussin, 64, served as bishop of Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, from 1995 to 1998, when he was named coadjutor bishop of Victoria. He became head of the Victoria Diocese a year later. Archbishop Roussin was born in Saint Boniface, Manitoba. He graduated from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1970 as a member of the Marianist Fathers and Brothers, according to a Canadian bishops' press statement. He taught in Quebec, Manitoba and St. Louis before being elected superior of his order, 1980-1986. He also served as president of the Western region of the Canadian Religious Conference, 1984-1986. Archbishop Roussin served as a member of the Canadian bishops' commissions for Christian education and for liturgy.
