Declining revenue causes Canadian Catholic newspaper to close doors
Published: 2004-01-07
OTTAWA (CNS) -- The Catholic newspaper in one of Canada's oldest cities has closed its doors after a series of annual deficits. The Monitor, the monthly newspaper of the Archdiocese of St. John's, Newfoundland, first published in February 1934. Archbishop Brendan O'Brien announced the closure of the newspaper in a letter to subscribers. It was "a very difficult decision to make but a necessary one given the financial situation of the archdiocese," he said. Declining circulation and advertising revenue had caused a $25,000 (US$19,400) annual deficit the past couple of years, the archbishop said. "The Archdiocese of St. John's can no longer continue to fund this deficit," he said.
