Catholic school students find that haircuts can help others

Published: 2004-01-07

DETROIT (CNS) -- Seven students from Our Lady of Guadalupe Middle School for Girls have learned that, in order to give, sometimes you have to put your heads together. Or, in this case, your hair. In December the students each donated at least 10 inches of their hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that makes and donates wigs for children who have lost their hair due to diseases or accidents. "It's important because some kids don't have hair," said Lorena Galvan, a fifth-grader at the middle school, "and I just want to help out." Locks of Love, based in Florida, takes hair donations by mail. The girls found the organization while trying to find a community service project on the Internet. Following the directions on the Locks of Love Web site at www.locksoflove.org, the girls had their hair tied into ponytails, clipped and sent to the organization. Donated hair should be at least 10 inches long.
