Caritas Internationalis says it will increase food aid to North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (CNS) -- Caritas Internationalis said it will increase food aid to North Korea as a safeguard against winter. After a meeting of Caritas' North Korea Country Group, the worldwide Catholic aid agency said it will focus assistance on children, pregnant women and nursing mothers in danger of malnutrition during North Korea's severe winter, reported UCA News, an Asian church news agency based in Thailand. Kathi Zellweger, manager of the Caritas aid program for North Korea, said aid workers are concerned that hundreds of thousands of North Korean children, pregnant women and nursing mothers are suffering from malnutrition, a condition that cannot be remedied by a diet of rice alone. "They need nutritious meals including protein, vitamins and other minerals essential for normal, healthy growth," she said.
