NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CNS) -- Supreme Knight Carl Anderson of the Knights of Columbus has been named a consultant to the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. Anderson, the only American among 10 new appointments to the council, will serve a five-year term. He currently serves on two other pontifical councils: the Pontifical Council for the Family and the Pontifical Council for the Laity. "It is an honor to represent the nearly 1.7 million members of the Knights of Columbus on the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace," said Anderson, noting that the appointment acknowledges the Knights' efforts to work with others in building a "global culture of peace." The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, instituted by Pope Paul VI in 1967, promotes the church's social teaching and the Gospel message on peace and justice issues throughout the world. It sponsors World Day of Peace annually on Jan. 1 and studies current trends in disarmament, the arms trade, human rights and the role of Catholics in the political arena.
