Published: 2003-12-18
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Georgetown University has named John Borelli, an internationally known specialist in Catholic relations with other religions, as special assistant to the president for interreligious initiatives. To take up the Georgetown post Borelli has resigned from the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, where he was associate director in charge of interreligious relations since 1987. He played a central role there in establishing the bishops' national dialogues with Hindus and Buddhists and three regional dialogues with Muslims. He also has been a consultor to the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue since 1989 and president of the National Association of Diocesan Ecumenical Officers since 2001. Borelli, 57, begins his new job at Georgetown Feb. 2. There he will work with the university president, John J. DiGioia, and other members of the Georgetown community to coordinate the university's contributions to interreligious understanding.
