NEW DELHI, India (CNS) -- Bishops in western India took part in a demonstration to call attention to human rights violations in the troubled state of Gujarat. "We wanted to show our solidarity with the suffering people and those fighting for their rights," said Bishop Thomas Macwan of Ahmedabad, who led 17 other bishops of the Western Regional Bishops' Council to the Dec. 10 demonstration. The bishops were holding their annual conference in Ahmedabad Dec. 10-12. More than 500 human rights activists attended the daylong demonstration demanding an end to human rights violations and ensuring that the rule of law be respected. Speakers called for the government to set up a human rights body in Gujarat.
