Though action delayed, nuncio says U.N. makes progress on cloning ban
Published: 2003-12-16
NEW YORK (CNS) -- Efforts this fall to secure an international convention against human cloning brought positive results even though the issue was postponed, according to the Vatican nuncio to the United Nations. Interviewed after a Dec. 9 vote of the U.N. General Assembly to delay action on the issue until next fall's session, Archbishop Celestino Migliore said the number of countries committed to banning all forms of human cloning rose from 30 to 66. The debate also helped sensitize delegates to the issue's importance, and supporters of a ban defeated attempts to get a two-year delay, he said. Vatican officials have identified human cloning as one of the most important issues facing the international community, and have worked hard to secure support for a ban.
