NEW YORK (CNS) -- Capuchin Franciscans of the St. Mary province honored Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., with their Matthew 25:35 award Dec. 9 for his support of anti-poverty and anti-hunger initiatives. "Throughout his career, Sen. Schumer has been a dogged fighter for the hungry, those in need of affordable housing, children seeking a quality education and immigrants who seek to make a better life for themselves and their families here in America," said Franciscan Father Francis Gasparik, director of the Capuchin Franciscans' Food Pantries Ministry, who presented the award. The Matthew 25:35 Award is named after a verse in the New Testament that says, "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me."
