Vatican office publishes anthology of papal teachings on culture

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Over the past 100 years, popes have responded with some praise and some sharp criticism to the rapid political, technological, ideological and philosophical changes the world has undergone. The Pontifical Council for Culture, at a Dec. 11 press conference, presented an anthology of the teachings and commentary of the last nine popes on matters related to "faith and culture." From Pope Leo XIII, elected in 1878, to the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, papal speeches and documents illustrated an "uninterrupted dialogue between faith and culture," said French Cardinal Paul Poupard, president of the council. The topics in the 1,574-page Italian book range "from the arts to technology, from ideologies to the family, from sports to politics, from universities to cultural identity, from globalization to inculturation," the cardinal said.
