Catholic-Lutheran dialogue group meets to finalize document

Published: 2003-12-10

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- After five years of dialogue, a team of 20 Catholic and Lutheran scholars moved toward finalizing a study of "The Church as Koinonia of Salvation: Its Structures and Ministries" during a recent meeting in Washington. The study -- which will include 10 recommendations to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and to the Catholic Church -- will be completed and made public next April in Milwaukee. "Five years of intensive and meticulous research have produced a striking consensus within our dialogue group," said Auxiliary Bishop Richard J. Sklba of Milwaukee, Catholic co-chairman of the Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue in the United States. "It has become very clear to me that the differences between our respective Lutheran and Catholic notions and practices of ministry are not church-dividing," he added. "We continue to pray for the gift of reconciliation for our churches."
