HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam (CNS) -- Church leaders attending a thanksgiving Mass for the new cardinal of Ho Chi Minh City said that the appointment was an honor and source of hope for Catholics in the country. Among the church leaders who attended the Dec. 9 Mass for Cardinal Jean-Baptiste Pham Minh Man was Cardinal Bernard F. Law, who resigned as archbishop of Boston in December 2002 in the wake of controversy over how he handled allegations of sex abuse made against Boston clergy, reported UCA News, an Asian church news agency based in Thailand. Cardinal Man was one of 30 new cardinals installed by Pope John Paul II in October. Although retired as archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Law, 72, continues to serve as a member of nine Vatican congregations and councils and is frequently in Rome.
