
Anthony Spence named new CNS director, editor in chief

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Anthony J. Spence, a former president of the Catholic Press Association who more recently has been in charge of more than a dozen publications at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., has been appointed director and editor in chief of Catholic News Service in Washington. Spence's appointment was announced Dec. 8 by Msgr. William P. Fay, general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It is effective Feb. 1. He will replace Thomas N. Lorsung, who is retiring after 31 years with the news service, including serving as its director and editor in chief since 1989. Before going to Vanderbilt in 1998, Spence, 50, was editor in chief and general manager of the Tennessee Register Inc., which publishes the Tennessee Register, newspaper of the Nashville Diocese, from 1989 to 1998. He also served as associate editor and managing editor at the newspaper, 1992-98.
