Cardinal Keeler joins 'The Wire' actor for World AIDS Day event
Published: 2003-12-05
BALTIMORE (CNS) -- Baltimore Cardinal William H. Keeler and Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley Dec. 1 joined Wendall Pierce, a star of "The Wire," the HBO series shot in Baltimore, in strongly advocating support for efforts to control the pandemic of HIV/AIDS that has ravaged sub-Saharan Africa. Quoting Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Keeler declared that HIV/AIDS "is something that cries out for all of humanity to make a response." He made the comments at a Catholic Relief Services-sponsored event to mark World AIDS Day held at the Walters Art Museum. It was attended by more than 100 guests and CRS staff members. "If Jesus were walking the world in corporeal form today, you know very well he would be spending time healing people of HIV and AIDS," O'Malley said, as he, too, called for a greater commitment to fight AIDS at home and abroad.
