Vatican says efforts to feed hungry should include small-farm support
Published: 2003-12-03
ROME (CNS) -- As it promotes efforts to feed the world's hungry and malnourished, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization must find ways to support the small farming and fishing ventures that are key to the economic life of most poor countries, a Vatican official said. The goal of reducing hunger and malnutrition worldwide must include making it possible for the poor to earn their living from food production and, thereby, to contribute to local economies, said Msgr. Renato Volante, head of the Vatican delegation to the FAO. The prelate spoke to the FAO general session Dec. 3 in Rome. The Vatican, he said, was involved in and supported the FAO's work because it shares the commitment "to see every single human being free from hunger and malnutrition."
