Marquette gets $1.2 million to address nursing shortage

Published: 2003-12-03

MILWAUKEE (CNS) -- The College of Nursing at Marquette University has received a federal grant of $1.2 million to address the nursing shortage by training more faculty members and expanding nursing's approach to health disparities through its doctoral program. The grant came from the nursing division of the Bureau of Health Professions in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration. "The critical shortage of nurses in this country is directly related to insufficient numbers of faculty to teach them," said Judith Miller, associate dean for graduate programs and research and professor of nursing. "Our doctoral program will help to address the severe shortage of nurse educators as well as to prepare scholars to study and resolve prevalent problems associated with health disparities," she added. "The new program will prepare teacher-scholars, a model of graduate education at Marquette."
