Apostles of Jesus bring missionary work from Africa to Cleveland
Published: 2003-12-02
CLEVELAND (CNS) -- The United States usually isn't thought of as a place where foreign priests are missionaries. But the African-based Apostles of Jesus are doing their missionary work in the United States, including Cleveland. Established in August 1968 in Uganda by two Italian Comboni missionaries to evangelize in Africa and the world, the Apostles of Jesus is the largest African missionary order of priests. The congregation includes about 380 priests and eight brothers working in East Africa, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Africa, Europe and the United States. Members commit themselves completely to meeting the spiritual, pastoral and social needs of people, with preference for the poor, said Father Augustine Njuu, superior general of the order, who himself is a former chaplain at Mercy Medical Center in Canton.
