Discalced Carmelites find sense of joy, peace at Wyoming monastery

Published: 2003-12-01

POWELL, Wyo. (CNS) -- The prior at a new monastery in Wyoming -- the Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary -- knows what it's like to live without distractions. Discalced Carmelite Father Daniel Mary of Jesus Crucified lives without a lot of things. He doesn't attend business meetings, go out with friends to movies, run countless errands or even watch the TV news in the morning before running out the door with a cup of coffee. But what he does have is a sense of joy, peace and love of God. The priest is joined by Brother Michael Mary of the Trinity and he is expecting a third man who will soon be accepted as a postulant. A dozen more have expressed interest in embracing this radical way of life to join the monastery in Clark, enclosed with a 6-foot-tall fence. In the back, the monastery opens up to sagebrush-covered hills where the men can take walks.
