VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope John Paul II has chosen the president of the University of St. Thomas in Houston to be the new secretary of the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education. Canadian-born Basilian Father J. Michael Miller, 57, was named an archbishop and secretary of the congregation Nov. 25, succeeding Archbishop Giuseppe Pittau, who celebrated his 75th birthday in October. Archbishop-designate Miller has served as president of the liberal arts university in Houston since 1997 and, except for a five-year period when he was working at the Vatican, he has been on the staff of the university since 1979. He worked on the English-language desk of the Vatican Secretariat of State from 1992 to 1997.
