Published: 2003-11-24

LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles became one of a select group of U.S. bishops to be invited into the Knights of Peter Claver national black Catholic fraternal organization during a ceremony Nov. 15 at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Los Angeles. "The Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver have been such a great influence on the church for almost 100 years now especially here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles," noted Cardinal Mahony. "So it was a very personal honor to be invited to share in the order particularly here in L.A. where the organization has such great leaders." Cardinal Mahony joins Cardinal Adam J. Maida of Detroit, Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes of New Orleans and Cardinal Francis E. George of Chicago as the fourth member of this elite group. The ceremony took place during a liturgy celebrating the Knights' commitment to service and dedication to the church.
