SANTA MONICA, Calif. (CNS) -- The Catholic Network of Volunteer Service honored John Geiger of the Diocese of Orlando, Fla., for his outstanding leadership in promoting the value of lay volunteer and mission service. Geiger, a former Peace Corps volunteer who founded Catholic Volunteers in Florida in 1983 to recruit and place individuals in full-time, one-year volunteer positions with church and community nonprofit social service organizations, received the Father George Mader Award Nov. 15 at the network's 40th anniversary conference in Santa Monica. After serving as executive director of Catholic Volunteers in Florida from 1983 to 2000 and as a consultant/trainer for the Corporation for National and Community Service from 1995 to 2000, Geiger now works for Orange County, Fla., as an engineer in the Environmental Protection Division.
