Published: 2003-11-17
DENVER (CNS) -- Sergio Gutierrez, who has worked in public affairs for the Bush administration and presidential campaign and for Colorado Gov. Bill Owens, has been appointed director of communications for the Archdiocese of Denver. Fran Maier, chancellor for the archdiocese, made the announcement Nov. 5. Gutierrez, 27, began working in August as a consultant to the archdiocese's Office of Catholic Schools in implementing the state's new school voucher program. The Colorado Opportunity Contract Pilot Program, which takes effect next fall, will allow low-income students in low-performing public schools to use tax money to attend private schools. As communications director, Gutierrez will serve as general manager of the Denver Catholic Register, archdiocesan newspaper, and as spokesman for the archdiocese. He will oversee media relations for the archdiocese, including the production of the televised Mass for shut-ins in English and Spanish. He also will serve as general director of the archdiocese's Spanish-language monthly newspaper, El Pueblo Catolico, and as director of the archdiocesan Web site.
