Changing times in China require new strategies, says agency director

MARYKNOLL, N.Y. (CNS) -- Changing conditions in China are requiring the U.S. Catholic China Bureau to plan new strategies and move to take advantage of new opportunities, according to the bureau's new director. Charles Douglas Lovejoy Jr., who will succeed Maryknoll Sister Janet Carroll Jan. 1, said in an interview that the purposes of the bureau remained the same as at its founding -- supporting the church in China and promoting understanding of it among American Catholics. But he said new opportunities for giving support were opening up, and new educational efforts were needed to make American Catholics aware of ways they could help. As an example, he said that during one of the bureau's study tours of China an American businessman became interested in a parish they visited, and began sending financial help. "We're looking for ways to do more of that," he said.
