Eastern bishops say publishing own religion textbooks successful
Published: 2003-11-13
WASHINGTON (CNS) -- If the nation's Latin-rite bishops have concerns over the quality of the catechetical textbooks published for their young people, they could take a page, so to speak, from their Eastern-rite brethren: Do it yourself. "That's what we do, we publish our own," said Bishop Robert M. Moskal of the Ukrainian Diocese of St. Josaphat in Parma, Ohio, who is outgoing president of Eastern Catholic Associates, the umbrella group for U.S. Eastern bishops. The textbooks have proved so popular that they have been translated into Ukrainian for use in Ukraine, he added. Eastern Catholic Associates is also pondering whether to translate them into Spanish, Portuguese, French and German to serve the needs of Byzantine Catholics who left their homeland generations ago. The Eastern dioceses have a multipart catechism series called "Light for Life." They also have a grade school catechetical series, "God With Us."
